Sarah Hunter was the founder of St. Agnes Hospital and wife of Rev. Aaron Burtis Hunter, the fourth principal of St. Augustine’s Normal School. Founded in 1896, the hospital was the only one for African Americans from Washington, D.C. to Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Hunter served as the hospital’s first superintendent and under her leadership the St. Agnes School of Nursing became the first professional nursing school for African Americans in North Carolina.
One of Saint Augustine’s University notable alumna, Dr. Selma Burke, is one of America’s most gifted and distinguished artists. Her most famous work is the bust of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt that is on the United States dime.
